I just watched a movie that was the most disgusting thing I’ve seen in… forever. Seriously, this made the Alien franchise look like a child’s cartoon. Here’s my Rotten Tomatoes review:
This movie has received accolades from all over and I have no idea why. It was difficult to watch and I brought up another browser to hide some of the more grotesque scenes. The excessive gore, violence and nudity was unnecessary and did nothing to advance the plot. It started out OK but in the end it just devolved into a B-Movie monster flick. The premise was interesting but it wasn’t used to its full potential. This could have been a great psychological horror but no such luck. It was a ridiculously stupid mess with a moronic ending.
What is it? The Substance. It started out well enough, sort of a Death Becomes Her vibe. But then it devolved into something that would make Stephen King say, “WTAF?” I know, I know, I shouldn’t throw shade at another writer, but I’m confused. Does this story cater to current audience preferences? I have nothing against the creator Coralie Fargeat, and she has every right to write what she wants, like the rest of us.
I always have to struggle to make anyone aware of my work. I’m not saying my writing is better than hers. We write in two different genres, after all. The disturbing nature of the subject makes the praise frustrating.
I know I can write a kick-ass screenplay, although I don’t have the resources to get it anywhere. Cannes requires you to have the movie completed. For them to notice a screenplay, it has to win a competition first, or at least that’s the response I got from Google.
I found some information about a competition: https://filmfreeway.com/CannesScripts
I’m uncertain concerning charge. It doesn’t say on the front page, but if you try to get additional information, it requires you to create an account. Although I figure I can just delete it if I need to.
I wrote a post a long time ago about embracing the weird. I was reading stories that made no sense to me, plot-wise, and I was wondering if that is what I have to write to get readers interested. I didn’t receive any comments last time, so I hope this time I can get some insight from the comments.
At the end, no clarification exists for the Substance. Who created it? Where did it come from? What is it made of? I suppose this doesn’t matter, but if I were writing the story, I would answer those questions. No one likes loose plot threads.
Peace~
